Just say no to live action Christmas specials

NBC has given the green light to a ive-action remake of the classic Rankin-Bass Christmas special Year Without a Santa Claus.

Now, I should preface this by saying that I'm a big fan of the Rankin-Bass Christmas specials, and Year Without a Santa Claus is one of my favorites. So, it's not all that surprising that my initial reaction is that this has "bad idea" written all over it.

The initial casting isn't changing my mind - I can maybe see John Goodman as Santa and Ethan Suplee as Jingle, but Eddie Griffin as Jangle is just wrong, and they seem to have invented some other elf character for the ever-annoying Chris Kattan. Then again, they haven't yet cast the two most important roles - Heat Miser and Snow Miser. Although it's been suggested to me that Jerry Stiller and Peter MacKay, respectively, would be well suited to these roles, I think it's unfortunately quite unlikely the casting director will go that route.
